The maker of the prescription drug reglan has been hit with hundreds if not thousands of lawsuits by women who were injured by the drug.
There are many adverse side effects associated with reglan, ranging from mild to severe. Side effects include restlessness, drowsiness, fatigue, insomnia, headache, dizziness, as well as mental depression with suicidal ideation. The most common side effect cited in the lawsuits is Tardive Dyskinesia.
Tardive Dyskinesia is a potentially irreversible and disfiguring disorder characterized by involuntary movements of the face, tongue and extremities. Some studies have shown that Tardive Dyskinesia is present in 20 percent of patients who used the drug for at least 12 weeks.
Medicine is used for the treatment of health problems, but irresponsible actions by drug companies can result in drugs doing more harm than good. If you have suffered injuries caused by the gastrointestinal drug Reglan, you may be able to pursue legal action against the manufacturer. Tardive dyskinesia is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary movements, commonly in the lower half of the face.
The word tardive means “delayed” and dyskinesia “abnormal movement.” Symptoms of the disorder include facial grimacing, jaw swinging, repetitive chewing and thrusting of the tongue. If diagnosed early, tardive dyskinesia may be reversed, but in some cases the involuntary movements may become permanent and could even worsen.
One of the most common causes of tardive dyskinesia is a drug called Reglan. The drug which is used to treat heartburn and acid-reflux is commonly prescribed for a period much longer than the recommended length of time.

The United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, in New Orleans, has denied an argument by the manufacturer of Reglan that federal law does not allow consumers to file failure-to-warn claims.
Actavis, Inc., the company that manufactures generic Reglan, argued that users of a specific generic Reglan had no legal right to file claims. The court dismissed the case in favor of a woman who now suffers from Tardive Dyskinesia, a rare disorder that causes involuntary and repetitive movement of the lower face and extremities, after using the drug.
The FDA issued a “black box” warning against the drug in February of last year. The warning stated that the drug, used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, increases the risk of Tardive Dyskinesia.
