Study shows elevated risk of hip fractures with heartburn medication

Posted on February 3rd, 2012 No Comments

A new study conducted by United States researchers has revealed an elevated risk of hip fractures in women who take proton pump inhibitor drugs for a prolonged period of time.

These heartburn drugs, proton pump inhibitors, were seen to increase the chance of a hip fracture by 1.5 times in women who smoked, and 1.35 times in women who were categorized as post-menopausal. The study took place between 2000 and 2008 and reviewed the lifestyles of 80,000 women.

Researchers noticed that when the women ceased taking the medication, their risk for these hip injuries subsided as well. They also acknowledged that the use of heartburn medication is increasing across the nation, and with this increase an expected rise in hip fracture cases is expected to exist.

Cases of heartburn increasing

Posted on February 1st, 2012 No Comments

Within the last 10 years, doctors have reported an increase in acid-reflux patients. This rise in heartburn patients has been attributed to poor lifestyle habits.

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid comes back up through the esophagus, irritating it. When left untreated, this condition could greatly damage the esophagus and lead to an increased risk of esophageal cancer. Symptoms of acid reflux include heartburn and nausea.

Doctors believe that this rise in cases is due to poor eating habits as well as exercise habits. A large consumption of spicy foods and alcohol can initiate acid reflux in an individual as well as eating at improper times. Altering these lifestyle choices could greatly reduce the severity of heartburn and acid reflux.

Severe heartburn has been treated with the prescription medication, Reglan. This medication has recently been linked to severe side effects, including the development of tardive dyskinesia. If you or someone you know has suffered from a serious side effect after taking Reglan, please contact the Reglan lawsuit lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.

Easy ways to minimize heartburn

Posted on January 27th, 2012 No Comments

While many people take medication to treat heartburn, some people find that changing their habits and living a healthier lifestyle alone can minimize heartburn symptoms.

For example, smoking has been shown to worsen heartburn pain.  Quitting smoking is a difficult process, but it could alleviate heartburn, and allow you to avoid relying on costly and potentially harmful heartburn medications like Reglan.  Similarly, losing weight is always a struggle, but maintaining a healthy weight can reduce heartburn.

Some easier ways to minimize heartburn pain include avoiding alcoholic beverages, acidic food, and eating less than 3 hours before going to bed at night.

If you or someone you love took Reglan to treat their heartburn pain, and later developed a side effect called Tardive Dyskinesia, contact the Reglan lawsuit attorneys of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.

FDA Selects Tardive Dyskinesia Drug For Fast Track Review

Neurocine Biosciences Incorporated is responsible for developing a drug for the treatment of tardive dyskinesia and the FDA has ordered that said drug to be moved to the fast track for labeling and review.

The FDA selects certain drugs for their Fast Track program when those drugs can be beneficial for treating severe illnesses so that they can be reviewed at a faster rate. The drug is called VMAT2 NBI-98854, and it is an inhibitor contender designed to help with tardive dyskinesia that is brought on by neuroleptic symptoms.

The protein, VMAT2, can be found in the brain and it’s main function is to move monoamines throughout the nerve cells. The inhibitor contender, NBI-98854, was created by the company in order to adapt to the release of dopamine during messages between nerves.

GERD and stomach cancer

Severe cases of gastroesophageal reflux disease, if not treated properly, can lead to stomach cancer.

When people suffering from GERD do not respond well to medication, a more serious condition may be present. Individuals with GERD should ask their doctors to perform an endoscopy on them in order to detect any signs of stomach cancer in the early stages.

This scope exam should be conducted if GERD patients have symptoms including; vomiting, weight loss, digestive tract bleeding, pain swallowing and a family history of stomach cancer. This type of cancer can be effectively treated when caught at an early stage.

Reglan has been used to treat GERD sufferers but has been linked to severe side effects, including the development of tardive dyskinesia. If you took Reglan and developed a serious side effect, please contact the Reglan lawsuit lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.

Study shows large increase in acid reflux symptoms

Posted on January 19th, 2012 No Comments

An acid reflux study conducted in Norway over the past 11 years has shown a large increase in the presence of acid reflux symptoms as well as heartburn.

The study examined over 30,000 individuals for 11 years to obtain this data. At the start of the study, 11.6 percent of the participants made note that they experienced acid reflux symptoms roughly once a week. After 11 years of collective data, the participants were polled again and this time, 17.1 percent reported acid reflux and heartburn symptoms. This jump in percentage equates to a 47 percent increase over time.

The reasons behind the increase were not researched through the study, but researchers believe that obesity plays a large role in these developments.

Incisionless surgery treats heartburn patients

Posted on January 18th, 2012 No Comments

An incisionless surgery in order to correct heartburn has increased in popularity across America.

Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication, TIF, became present in the United States five years ago and since then has helped 8,000 people suffering from heartburn. The surgery consists of a scope being inserted through the patient’s mouth, and by using that scope, doctors are able to build a physiological valve that will help put a stop to reflux. Since the procedure is incisionless, it is safer in regards to infection and bleeding.

The studies that have been conducted on the surgical procedure have shown that TIF can help reduce people’s need for heartburn medication by over 80 percent. There are very few side effects to the surgery, and many individuals find this process as a stable treatment option.

Reglan is a common prescription medication that has been used to treat acid reflux symptoms. This drug has been linked to severe side effects, including tardive dyskinesia. FDA stands behind implantable device for GERD patients

Posted on January 12th, 2012 No Comments

The LINX is a revolutionary implantable device that could change the way GERD patients cope with their condition.

An FDA committee has just voted in favor of the use of this device, stating that they believe it is safe for the public. People who would benefit from the LINX are people who are not responsive to other medication offered for gastroesophageal reflux disease. The benefits of this new option outweigh the risks associated with it, according to the FDA panel.

This implantable device is comprised of magnetic beads located on a ring made of titanium. It is implanted around the esophagus and will allow food and liquids to pass through but will make it harder for acid to come back up through the esophagus which causes acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Reglan has been used to treat sufferers of gastroesophageal reflux disease, GERD. This medication has been linked to severe side effects. If you took Reglan and developed a severe side effect, please contact the Reglan lawsuit lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.

Teen suffering from gastroparesis hoping for ‘bionic stomach’

Posted on January 12th, 2012 No Comments

A 15-year-old girl living in England has been suffering severe side effects from gastroparesis for the last 12 months.

She developed the condition in January of 2011 and ever since then has been unable to keep her food in her stomach. The condition, gastroparesis, hinders the stomach’s ability to empty contents at a normal rate. In the teenager’s case, she is unable to digest food at all and, on average, vomits 50 times per day.

The teen and her family are hopeful that a surgery to insert a gastric pacemaker into her stomach can allow her to manage her symptoms much better. Currently, her only option is a permanent feeding tube attached through her nose. The ‘bionic stomach’ could physically force the stomach to contract. They are waiting to hear word on financial aid for the surgery.

Reglan is a prescription drug that has commonly been prescribed to help with the symptoms of gastroparesis. This drug  has been linked to severe side effects, including a condition called nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. If you were prescribed Reglan and have since developed a serious side effect, please contact the Reglan lawsuit lawyers of Williams Kherkher by calling 800-761-3187 today.
