The Many Side Effects of Reglan

Posted on February 26th, 2010 No Comments

The maker of the prescription drug reglan has been hit with hundreds if not thousands of lawsuits by women who were injured by the drug.

There are many adverse side effects associated with reglan, ranging from mild to severe. Side effects include restlessness, drowsiness, fatigue, insomnia, headache, dizziness, as well as mental depression with suicidal ideation.  The most common side effect cited in the lawsuits is Tardive Dyskinesia.

Tardive Dyskinesia is a potentially irreversible and disfiguring disorder characterized by involuntary movements of the face, tongue and extremities. Some studies have shown that Tardive Dyskinesia is present in 20 percent of patients who used the drug for at least 12 weeks.

Medicine is used for the treatment of health problems, but irresponsible actions by drug companies can result in drugs doing more harm than good. If you have suffered injuries caused by the gastrointestinal drug Reglan, you may be able to pursue legal action against the manufacturer. What is Tardive Dyskinesia?

Posted on February 19th, 2010 No Comments

Tardive dyskinesia is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary movements, commonly in the lower half of the face.

The word tardive means “delayed” and dyskinesia “abnormal movement.” Symptoms of the disorder include facial grimacing, jaw swinging, repetitive chewing and thrusting of the tongue. If diagnosed early, tardive dyskinesia may be reversed, but in some cases the involuntary movements may become permanent and could even worsen.

One of the most common causes of tardive dyskinesia is a drug called Reglan. The drug which is used to treat heartburn and acid-reflux is commonly prescribed for a period much longer than the recommended length of time.

If you have suffered injuries caused by the gastrointestinal drug Reglan, you may be able to pursue legal action against the manufacturer. For more information contact the Reglan lawyers of Williams Kherkher at 800-761-3187 today.

Court Rules Reglan Lawsuits Permissible Under Federal Law

Posted on February 12th, 2010 No Comments

The United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, in New Orleans, has denied an argument by the manufacturer of Reglan that federal law does not allow consumers to file failure-to-warn claims.

Actavis, Inc., the company that manufactures generic Reglan, argued that users of a specific generic Reglan had no legal right to file claims. The court dismissed the case in favor of a woman who now suffers from Tardive Dyskinesia, a rare disorder that causes involuntary and repetitive movement of the lower face and extremities, after using the drug.

The FDA issued a “black box” warning against the drug in February of last year. The warning stated that the drug, used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease, increases the risk of Tardive Dyskinesia.

Parents Concerned About Effect of Reglan on Infants

Posted on January 29th, 2010 No Comments

When the FDA initially warned consumers about the possible side-effects associated with the gastrointestinal drug Reglan, it mentioned the groups at highest risk of developing complications associated with the drug, which at the time included the elderly and persons who took the drug for longer than three months. Unfortunately, many parents are becoming concerned about the effect the drug may have had on their infants and young children.

Parents are specifically concerned about tardive dyskinesia, a movement disorder that has been associated with Reglan, in which patients display uncontrollable movements, excessive blinking, and protruding tongue.

The drug is meant to be taken for a period of three months, and some patients who took the drug on a long-term basis have discovered that the drug may have serious and irreversible side effects.

Studies Show Reglan Side Effects Similar to Parkinson’s Disease

Posted on December 29th, 2009 No Comments

Recent studies have suggested that individuals who have taken the popular gastrointestinal drug Reglan may suffer serious side effects that may be confused with the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. Persons who have taken Reglan have reported serious health problems including “tardive dyskinesia” a serious movement disorder that has been linked to dopamine and the brain.

Medical professionals suggest that individuals suffering from Reglan side effects may mistakenly believe they are suffering from Parkinson’s disease, since both health issues affect the brain and movement. Persons suffering from serious movement disorders should be careful to mention any and all medication they are taking to their doctor during diagnosis.

Reglan Lawsuit to Proceed Against Seven Generic Drug Manufacturers

Posted on December 23rd, 2009 No Comments

Following recent news about the dismissal of charges against the drug companies Wyeth and Schwartz in recent Reglan lawsuits, a judge ruled that the lawsuits can proceed against Pliva, Inc. and six unnamed generic drug manufacturers.

Persons who have taken generic versions of the gastrointestinal drug have reported symptoms indicating a neurological disorder called “tardive dyskinesia”, that can cause unintentional motion of the limbs, blinking, chewing, and other uncontrolled movements.

Liability Suit Wont Include Wyeth and Schwarz Pharmaceuticals

Posted on December 18th, 2009 No Comments

A U.S. District Court in West Virginia has recently ruled that Wyeth and Schwarz Pharmaceuticals can not be responsible after an individual suffered from the side effects of a generic version of Reglan. The ruling stated that because Wyeth and Schwarz did not manufacture the drug in question, they can not be held responsible for the side effects that individuals suffered from generic versions.

Reglan Linked to Involuntary Twitching

Posted on December 10th, 2009 No Comments

A woman in Florida says her son’s twitch is due to his use of the prescription drug Reglan.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, said “when he was little, he was put on Reglan because he has a lot of acid reflux problems… Now he is seven. He does these things where he’ll put his hands up and twitch them. Doctors tell us that it is normal and he’ll grow out of it but I’ve never seen this before. When he gets excited, he makes these grimacing faces that I’ve never seen a child make.”

In February 2009 the United States Food and Drug Administration ordered the makers of Reglan to place a black label warning on the drug. Studies have shown that the gastro-esophageal reflux medicine is linked to Dyskinesia, involuntary movement of the limbs.

Methods for reducing heartburn

Posted on November 20th, 2009 No Comments

Many people search for inventive ways to reduce heartburn. However, for most people, heartburn can be reduced through a few simple lifestyle changes.

For instance, because being overweight is linked to heartburn, people can reduce heartburn by losing weight through diet or exercise. Similarly, people who smoke can reduce heartburn by quitting smoking.

While these methods may not reduce heartburn for some people, they have been proven to have positive effects for many people.
