A new study conducted by United States researchers has revealed an elevated risk of hip fractures in women who take proton pump inhibitor drugs for a prolonged period of time.
These heartburn drugs, proton pump inhibitors, were seen to increase the chance of a hip fracture by 1.5 times in women who smoked, and 1.35 times in women who were categorized as post-menopausal. The study took place between 2000 and 2008 and reviewed the lifestyles of 80,000 women.
Researchers noticed that when the women ceased taking the medication, their risk for these hip injuries subsided as well. They also acknowledged that the use of heartburn medication is increasing across the nation, and with this increase an expected rise in hip fracture cases is expected to exist.
